Introduction to the application areas of high-resolution hyperspectral satellites

Xplore, a dual-use space company, launched its first CubeSat hyperspectral satellite, XCUBE-1, from Vandenberg Space Center in California at 3:34 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on December 21, 2024. The satellite was launched in a co-orbital mission with SpaceX, carried out by launch integrator Maverick Space Systems in collaboration with SpaceX, and was deployed into a mid-inclination orbit. This marks a significant milestone in Xplore's constellation deployment and service offerings.

Application Areas Introduction

Compared to mainstream hyperspectral satellites with a ground resolution of 30 meters, high ground resolution significantly improves data precision and application potential.

In the defense field, a 5-meter resolution can more accurately identify minute traces of disturbed soil, precisely locate newly laid minefields, and even distinguish subtle spectral differences in camouflaged targets, greatly improving the reliability of intelligence analysis and tactical advantages.

Agricultural users can obtain more detailed information on soil quality distribution, local moisture changes, and early pest and disease characteristics through high-resolution data. Compared with low-resolution data, this allows for earlier detection of problems and enables precise fertilization and control, thus optimizing resource utilization.

In forestry management, it enables smaller-scale tree species identification, vegetation health assessment, and flammable material distribution mapping, significantly improving the accuracy of forest fire risk prediction. In marine monitoring, high-resolution spectral features can more clearly track the minute activity traces of illegal fishing vessels, the precise range of pollution diffusion, and subtle changes in marine ecology, helping law enforcement agencies respond quickly to illegal activities.

On June 10, 2025, Xplore released the first hyperspectral images taken by its first satellite, XCUBE-1, marking the first time that Xplore satellites have publicly demonstrated the exceptional detail and clarity of their images.

Tuxiguang-1 05 satellite

The Xiguang-1 05 satellite is equipped with a high-resolution hyperspectral camera and a panchromatic camera, and also has the capability for 5-meter resolution hyperspectral imaging after fusion. This further enhances the data acquisition capabilities of the Xiguang-1 constellation and expands its application scope. It can solve problems related to agricultural crop identification, pest and disease identification, and risk early warning. Its application algorithms and models are also more mature, providing diversified services covering agricultural monitoring, mineral exploration, and environmental monitoring for Anqing City in Anhui Province, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and even the wider East China region. Its application in pre-production, production, and post-production services in agriculture brings significant benefits to the agricultural economy and can also meet the rapid service needs of different regions and industries.
