The Kunming Lake project is located in the southern part of Fengdong New City, with a planned area west of the Luocheng Expressway, east of the Fenghe River, and north of the Xi'an-Hanzhong Expressway. The Kunming Lake project in Fengdong New City will utilize the abundant water resources of the Fenghe River to restore and construct a 6,500-mu (approximately 433 hectares) lake, creating a large-scale, green, and scenic resort and leisure tourism area in Xi'an. It aims to develop a harmonious waterfront residential model themed around ecological and cultural tourism, with residential living as the core, and integrating culture, tourism, and leisure, thus building a water ecological civilization area.

Monitoring Project Background Information

Kunming Pool serves as a regulating reservoir north of the Qinling Mountains for the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion Project and as the water source for Fengdong New City. The overall planning layout is "one pool and two lakes," with a total planned area of 35.88 km2. The plan revolves around 10.4 km2 of Kunming Pool (the water surface of the South Lake and the North Lake, with a total storage capacity of approximately 48.4 million cubic meters), primarily for water supply, ecology, culture, leisure, tourism, and vacation functions.

CAS Xiguang Aerospace - Project Construction Progress Monitoring

The Beihu project covers an area of 6.9 square kilometers with a reservoir capacity of 22.4 million cubic meters. Beihu is positioned as an ecological water system landscape. The raw water source is introduced from the Fenghe Fenghui Canal. The Fenghe River has an average annual runoff of 423 million cubic meters, and the Qinzhen Dam at the head of the Fenghui Canal has an average annual inflow of 284 million cubic meters, ensuring a sufficient and reliable raw water source.

The Xiguang Aerospace team of the Chinese Academy of Sciences monitored the construction progress of the Kunming Pool Park project from 2019 to 2024 through remote sensing satellites. The images clearly show that the planning of the scenic area began in 2020, and the Kunbei Lake area had taken shape in July 2021, with water diversion successfully completed.

The Nanhu Project covers a planned area of 3.5 square kilometers with a reservoir capacity of 26 million cubic meters. It is positioned as the water source for the Fengdong New City, with its raw water supplied by the Xi'an water distribution pipeline of the "Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion Project." According to the water allocation plan of the "Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Water Diversion Project," the net water allocation to Xi'an in 2020 was 406 million cubic meters, ensuring a sufficient water supply from Nanhu. The water from Nanhu will be used as raw water to the existing and planned water treatment plants in Fengdong New City. Monitoring also shows that water diversion to the entire lake began in October 2021, and the map from July 2022 shows that the entire lake area had been expanded.

In addition, regarding the impact on the landscape vegetation and ecological environment of Kunming Pool, an analysis of crops around Kunming Pool in 2019 shows that the farmland around Kunming Pool is relatively well-organized. During the project's initiation, apart from the construction land planned for the scenic area, the overall crop growth analysis from July and August of 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 shows that the surrounding crops have remained in good health and have not been affected by the project's construction.
