Snow cover monitoring remote sensing – supporting the development of scientific management strategies

Snow cover is a significant winter climate phenomenon in my country, impacting climate change, water resources, the ecological environment, and animal husbandry. However, due to my country's vast and complex topography, traditional accurate monitoring methods are limited by factors such as a small number of observation stations, uneven spatial distribution, discontinuous observation time, and insufficient information on regional snow cover distribution and changes. Today, with continuous technological advancements, satellite remote sensing has become an ideal tool for snow cover monitoring. Snow cover monitoring methods based on satellite remote sensing technology can accurately and efficiently obtain snow cover information for various regions, providing crucial support for my country's ecological environment management and animal husbandry development.

Advantages of remote sensing technology for snow cover monitoring

First, remote sensing technology can acquire large-scale snow cover data and perform spatial and temporal analysis. By acquiring snow cover data at different points in time, the changing process and spatial distribution of snow cover can be observed. Temporal analysis of snow cover data can reveal the seasonal variation patterns of snow cover, providing important reference information. Simultaneously, spatial analysis can reveal the distribution of snow cover in different regions, demonstrating the spatial variation patterns of snow cover.

Secondly, snow cover has a significant impact on the health of ecosystems. By monitoring the distribution and changes in snow cover, timely measures can be taken to prevent the overexploitation of grasslands and the deterioration of the ecological environment. At the same time, snow cover monitoring results can also provide a scientific basis for the development of animal husbandry, helping decision-makers to rationally plan livestock production and management.


In the future, by further combining data from meteorological, topographical, and other factors, and through comprehensive analysis of the interactions of different factors, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the formation and change mechanisms of snow cover, and comprehensively analyze the formation of snow cover and its impact on the ecosystem. CAS Xi'an Aerospace - Snow Remote Sensing Monitoring

Altay Prefecture in Xinjiang is one of the main areas in my country with seasonal snowmelt resources. The spring floods formed by snowmelt are of great importance to agricultural irrigation and are a major constraint on agricultural survival and development in arid regions. The snow season begins in October and ends in late March or early April of the following year. This report presents the snow cover extent in Altay Prefecture in October 2023.

Satellite remote sensing data can be used to obtain remote sensing images of snow cover in the corresponding area. First, the acquired remote sensing data can be preprocessed, including cloud and snow cover removal, radiometric calibration, and geometric correction. Then, utilizing the multi-temporal and multi-band characteristics of different remote sensing data, a thresholding method is used to distinguish between snow cover and non-snow cover.

Based on the acquired remote sensing images of snow cover, spatial distribution and statistical analysis can be performed. First, the snow cover images are classified and segmented to extract the spatial extent of the snow-covered areas. Then, through spatial overlay and overlay analysis functions, snow cover information is correlated with geographic features, such as grassland cover type and terrain slope, to explore the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of snow cover.

By monitoring and analyzing snow cover using remote sensing technology, we can better understand the distribution and variation patterns of snow cover. By strengthening research on the distribution and variation patterns of snow cover, we can further explore the impact mechanisms of snow cover on ecosystem health and promote my country's sustainable development.
