Remote sensing monitoring of vegetation index: providing important evidence for ecological and environmental protection in my country

In recent years, with the increasing severity of environmental problems, people have paid more and more attention to environmental protection. Vegetation, as an important component of the Earth's ecosystem, plays a vital role in environmental protection. Vegetation index remote sensing monitoring technology is a method that can obtain vegetation status through satellite remote sensing images, and its application in environmental protection is becoming increasingly widespread.

Remote sensing satellite monitoring - vegetation index

Vegetation indices are derived from the spectral characteristics of vegetation by combining visible and near-infrared satellite wavelengths. They are simple and effective measures of land cover conditions, with over 40 indices currently defined. These indices are widely used in global and regional land cover analysis, vegetation classification, environmental change, primary productivity analysis, crop and forage yield estimation, and drought monitoring. They have also been integrated into interactive biosphere models and productivity models as part of global climate models and are widely used in terrestrial applications such as early famine warning systems. Furthermore, vegetation indices can be converted into canopy biophysical parameters.

 Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) 

Because vegetation has strong reflectivity in the near-infrared band and strong absorption in the red band, its reflectivity is relatively low.Therefore, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) can quantify vegetation growth by calculating the difference between the near-infrared and red bands.This index reflects the health and growth of vegetation. Due to its simple calculation and good indicative nature, it is widely used in agriculture, forestry, and ecological environment fields. It is also an important input parameter for the inversion of ecological physical parameters and is one of the most widely used vegetation indices. Among typical spectral vegetation indices, NDVI is one of the most suitable indices for monitoring crop growth dynamics and can measure the active biomass of photosynthesis in plants.

Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) 

The Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) is derived from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Since the NDVI index is easily affected by soil background and atmospheric interference, the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) was proposed to adjust the NDVI results to accommodate atmospheric and soil noise, particularly in densely vegetated areas, where it can reduce saturation in most cases.
