Potential unicorns, as the core reserve of unicorn companies, have clear and stringent selection criteria: They must be legally registered companies in China; have been established for no more than 9 years; have received private equity investment from professional investment institutions and have not yet gone public; have a post-investment valuation of over US$100 million in their most recent round of financing within the last 5 years of establishment, and a cumulative financing amount of over US$5 million; or have a post-investment valuation of over US$500 million in their most recent round of financing within the last 5-9 years of establishment, and a cumulative financing amount of over US$25 million; and belong to emerging industries encouraged by the state, exhibiting innovative and entrepreneurial characteristics.

According to the "GEI China Potential Unicorn Companies Research Report 2026," there will be 796 potential unicorn companies in China by 2025. Their development is characterized by a younger workforce, cutting-edge technology dominance, future industry leadership, and a concentration of capital and talent. Over the past seven years, a total of 1,970 potential unicorn companies have been listed, with the number of new entrants remaining above 200 annually, demonstrating strong growth momentum.
